The Therapy

There are two therapies that you might receive in this study.

The control therapy - Prolonged Exposure

The first is called Prolonged Exposure and was developed by Prof Edna Foa. It is based on the idea that when we experience a difficult event that we can't get over, then we need to teach our brain to differentiate between things that are really dangerous and those that seem to be dangerous. This is done by a gradual process of exposure to avoided situations. Prolonged Exposure has been tested in hundreds of research studies and has been shown to be extremely effective – in fact it is the most recommended treatment. This therapy will take place in one of our clinics.

The noval therapy - PIT

The second therapy is called PIT – this therapy, designed by our team, contains different elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and includes techniques such as relaxation, behavior change and cognitive change. PIT is designed to take place over the internet and uses an interactive platform for the therapist and patient to communicate. PIT uses Virtual Reality – this is the first time in the world that VR therapy can be accessed online! Patients getting this therapy will be given a VR headset and a laptop to use during the therapy (please give them back at the end!) and will be able to use our specially designed online VR. Four sessions of PIT will take place at our clinics (so you can meet your therapist and be introduced to the technology), the other six will be over the internet.

We hope that both these treatments will be very helpful in reducing your symptoms – the aim of the study is to check that PIT works as well as PE does. That’s why the study needs to keep assessing your symptoms, even after the treatment ends.
